How we work

A walk together

The Work

Based on the plan we develop in our initial sessions, we will spend time interacting with the horses as a way of learning about relationships. This can include learning a horsemanship skill, playing a game, grooming, leading, or simply relaxing with the herd, which are all situations that allow relationship patterns and dynamics to surface naturally. Most learning opportunities can be worked through directly with the horses. However, if we identify something that you would like to explore more deeply in another way, we may head to the office for a particular activity, or to learn a specific skill which we can later practice with the horses.

Getting Started:

  • Call me and share a bit about your situation. I can help you understand how we can meet your needs.
  • Schedule a free consultation to meet me and the horses to make sure we would work well together.

Requirements:

  • You must wear appropriate clothing for safety reasons. These include long pants, layered clothing, and boots or other sturdy footwear.
  • You are not required to have any prior horse experience.
  • Most sessions are conducted on the ground, but can progress to riding once a trusting relationship is built, over time, between you and a special horse.

Rates and Insurance:

  • I am a fee for service provider.
  • Most insurance companies will cover a licensed “out of network” provider. I am happy to contact your insurance company to establish if services will be covered.
  • Pending contract with the Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD) for those who qualify.
  • Initial Assessment at the rate of $200 for a two hour session.
  • Individual, couple, or family counseling (does not include work with horses) at the rate of $110.00 per 60 minute hour.

Low income options:

  • 2 pro-bono slots available for those who meet the income qualifications. There is currently a waiting list.

Groups:

Social skills group participants are drawn from my existing client base, based on age and skill level. Clients who have participated in the assessment and Mutual Education Plan process and have clearly established goals may choose group work as a replacement for, or a supplement to, our individual sessions. Group rate is $55.00 per 90 minute session. Maximum 3 participants per group.

Session schedule:

  • During our first sessions, we will develop a Mutual Education Plan to establish your specific needs and what we have to learn from one another. This process will help us decide the best course of action. Frequency of sessions depends on your individual goals.
  • Those participating in groups will be required to commit to a 12 week series.
